It usually starts innocently enough.
You open your email, scroll past a few things, and then… there it is.
A book. On sale. Calling your name.
You tell yourself, “I’ll just take a quick look.”
Five minutes later, you’ve clicked “buy now,” maybe once… maybe three times… and suddenly your TBR pile has grown again.
Because somehow, we keep buying books we don’t have time to read.
But it’s fine.
You’ll definitely read them all this month.
Right?
Let’s Be Honest for a Minute
If you’re anything like me, you probably have:
- A stack of books on your nightstand
- A few more tucked on a shelf “for later”
- And a digital library that keeps quietly expanding
And while we fully intend to read every single one… life has a way of filling our days before we ever get there.
So why do we keep buying books we don’t have time to read?

It Might Be More Than Just a Book
Yes, sometimes it’s the sale. (Because 99¢ feels like a perfectly reasonable decision.)
But often, it goes a little deeper than that.
We buy books because:
- We’re hopeful
This might be the story that pulls us in, lifts our spirits, or stays with us long after the last page. - We love what books represent
Quiet moments. Cozy afternoons. A chance to step away from the noise. - We see ourselves as readers
And readers… well, we read. Or at least we plan to. - We’re looking for something
Encouragement. Escape. Inspiration. A reminder that we’re not alone.
Sometimes the book isn’t just a book.
It’s a possibility.
When Life Doesn’t Match Our Reading Plans
The truth is, most of us aren’t short on desire to read—we’re short on margin.
Between responsibilities, schedules, and the everyday demands of life, reading often gets pushed to the side. And before we know it, that hopeful stack of books starts to feel a little… overwhelming.
Not because we don’t want to read them.
But because we feel like we should have already.
A Gentle Reminder
Here’s something we don’t say often enough:
You don’t have to earn your reading time.
And you don’t have to keep up.
There’s grace for the season you’re in.
Some seasons allow for long, uninterrupted afternoons with a good book.
Others give you a few pages before bed… if you’re still awake.
And both are okay.
God designed us to enjoy beauty, creativity, and story. There’s no guilt in that. But there’s also no pressure to turn reading into one more thing to manage or measure.

A Simple Way Forward
Instead of looking at your entire TBR pile, try this:
- Choose one book for right now
- Let the rest wait without guilt
- Trust that when the time is right, the right story will rise to the top
You don’t need to read everything.
You just need to read what your heart has room for today.
One Last Thought

That stack of unread books?
It’s not a failure.
It’s not a burden.
It’s a collection of possibilities—waiting patiently for the right moment, the right mood, and the right season.
And when that moment comes, the story will be there.
Right where you left it.

Whenever I add to my ever growing TBR pile, I tell myself when I’m old and can only sit in my recliner, I’ll have loads of books to read! haha!
Such a great blog, Liana! I love the guilt-free and relaxed mindset encouraged here. I think it will strike a chord with many, many readers.
