A difficult-to-read yet worthwhile novel. Six-year-old Sunday Pennington Duval, the daughter of a free, African American furniture maker and his wife, is stolen from her home and sold into slavery in the pre-Civil War South. This is her story, and that of other slaves from the Duval plantation. It’s a difficult book to read, as it reveals the cruelty and inhumanity of slavery. Yet it also reveals the strength and resiliency of an enslaved people and how God’s love can empower and change wounded hearts. If you’re a fan of historical fiction, I recommend you read Lord, Send Sunday.
