Coming Home to Mercy returns the reader to Oswell City, Iowa in 1913. While I really enjoyed learning the latest about Logan, Karen and their baby twins, this story focused on Karen’s mother, Margaret and her budding relationship with town doctor Matthew Kaldenburg. While Christian historical romance is my favorite genre to read, I found this story to be quite refreshing and unique as it focused on the developing relationship of a middle-aged couple rather than on a young couple starting out, as many stories often do.
Matthew’s pursuit of his long-held interest in flying played a significant role and added a very interesting dimension to the story while Margaret debated which of two worlds she belonged in, the city or the country. The inspirational messages of forgiveness, mercy and trust were a beautiful part of the novel as the characters each tried to discern the best path forward. While this book expounds upon details gleaned in Ms. de Bruin’s Tomorrow Series, it is not necessary to have read those books to enjoy this story as sufficient background is provided and the focus is on different characters.
