When my kids were younger, I read them The Hobbit several times. As Tolkien brought new creatures to life and introduced us to new places, we scanned the map to see where the story was leading us. I like books with maps. And, I like books with sword fights, dwarves, a medieval feel, and a growing conflict between good and evil.
Succession by Brett Armstrong is one such book. In truth, it’s a coming-of-age tale about a young man struggling against age-old prejudices, who must protect a sacred artifact from those who would use its power to conquer all that’s good in the world.
I’ve been asked why a small Christian press publishes speculative fiction. My short answer is usually, “Have you ever read any speculative fiction?” The fantasies I’ve read have a strong good-versus-evil thread and often contain a spiritual theme woven through the action/adventure storyline.
If you’re new to fantasy fiction, I suggest giving Succession a read. It’s short (a novella), and includes plenty of action and unique characters as it transports readers to a realm beyond our world. If you’re not new to fantasy, you’ll feel right at home in the Northwestern Lowlands.
