There’s something unforgettable about Savannah, Georgia. From cobblestone streets and centuries-old architecture to the rhythm of the Savannah River and the breezy charm of nearby Tybee Island, this coastal city offers more than a relaxing getaway. For writers, Savannah Georgia travel inspiration is everywhere. What began as a late summer road trip quickly became the spark for a contemporary romance set against riverfront history, paddlewheel cruises, and even hurricane season. Sometimes the best stories begin with simply saying yes to a new destination.

Captivated by a Coastal City
by Jenny Carlisle
A common trait of authors is that every vacation becomes fodder for future stories. When my husband and I planned a late summer road trip to a new-to-us destination, I had no idea I would be so captivated and inspired.
Setting off from our home in Central Arkansas, we headed east and then south. Rather than taking the freeway route through Atlanta, we routed through Auburn, Alabama, then drove into the heart of Georgia’s rich agricultural region. Peanuts, Peaches and Pecans were available at roadside stands in the midst of miles and miles of lush, green beauty.
When we reached the coast, the historical downtown area of Savannah welcomed us. Our hotel featured a view of the busy riverfront, including eye-level connection with the huge barges that passed by on their way to and from the world’s busiest ports. The centuries old buildings called to me. Cobblestone streets led to charming shops on the riverfront.

With our car safely guarded by the hotel’s valet, my husband and I set off on foot and discovered the coastal specialties that make Savannah famous. We even took an afternoon cruise on the Georgia Queen, an authentic paddlewheel riverboat. This proved to be a perfect way to hear local legends and enough real history to whet my thirst for more Savannah stories.

On our last day in town, we ventured out to Tybee Island. The late summer sunshine made me long to find a beach chair. The rhythm of the waves was mesmerizing. I knew there would have to be another visit, when we could plan to stay longer. As we walked back to the car, I noticed a home on the beach, and wondered if the owners might rent it to visitors.

When my imaginative friend Ellen suggested we collaborate on a group of “fish out of water” story, I remembered my son’s description of his first big career move in the television industry. When a promotion took him from Arkansas to Orlando, Florida, he told me he felt like a goldfish dropped into the ocean. I decided to send Tara Williams, the television reporter from my Crossroads series to a new job as an anchor in Savannah.
Since the genre of our collection was contemporary romance, I created a handsome and intriguing man who would teach Tara about her new home. I was inspired by a jogger we passed on our trip to Tybee. Giving Micah Roland a job as captain of the Georgia Queen started a romantic adventure with all the twists and turns of the Savannah River.
The second common theme of our collaboration Romancing the Elements prompted me to set my story during hurricane season. I drew on the experience of my son and his sweet native Floridian wife to make Tara and Micah’s storm preparations more realistic.
I hope that Anchor in a Whirlwind will provide excitement and inspiration along with sweet romance. My main characters learn that no challenge must be faced alone. Trusting in the Lord brings them through every storm. My husband and I are hoping to go back to the Hostess City to soak up more history and romance. I would be happy to skip the potential hurricane, but God’s plan is always perfect!

Title: Romancing the Elements (Novella Collection)
Authors: Ellen E. Withers, Delores Topliff, Tonya B. Ashley, and Jenny Carlisle
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: February 10, 2026
When love is rooted in God, no force of nature can stand against it.
In Romancing the Elements, four couples find themselves far outside their comfort zones—facing icy storms, relentless winds, rugged wilderness, and unyielding stone. Each story weaves faith, romance, and the raw beauty of God’s creation into journeys where love is tested, refined, and ultimately strengthened.
In Melting the Ice, a driven executive discovers that surrendering control may be the first step toward real partnership when an unexpected ice storm—and a gentle giant—disrupt her carefully planned life.
Anchor in the Wind follows a television reporter adrift in a new coastal city, where hurricane season and a quiet riverboat captain challenge her ideas of home, faith, and belonging.
In Enduring Stones, two battle-tested veterans confront old wounds and unexpected hope amid Montana’s unforgiving terrain, learning that endurance is forged through trust and grace.
And in Grace & Grit, a wilderness retreat pushes broken hearts onto the trail, where healing, humor, and faith walk hand in hand through fire and fear.
Across every element, these stories remind us that when God is at the center, love doesn’t just survive—it takes root and grows.
