There’s still time to enter the fifth annual Scrivenings Press #novelstarts and #getpubbed contests! As the August 15th deadline approaches, we want to clear up a few points of confusion by answering some questions we’ve been asked.
1. Can I enter the contests if I’m already published? The answer is YES. The rules state that the “entries” must not be published, but published authors (either self-pubbed or traditionally published) may enter.
2. Can I enter both NovelStarts and GetPubbed? The answer is YES. Some previous contest entrants actually placed in both contests. You may even enter the same submission in both contests if you want to get additional feedback, as each contest has a different set of judges.
3. Can I submit multiple entries? The answer is YES. We have had double-winners in the past. If you win two categories (or two contests!), you will receive the prize for both!
4. What if I don’t see the genre category of my entry? To ensure we have enough entries per category, we have chosen broad genres (Contemporary, Mystery/Suspense, Historical, and Speculative). Select the category that best fits your entry. Our categories are based on genre, not reading age. (For example, if you’ve written a middle grade space opera, submit that to Speculative. There is no separate category for YA or MG fiction.)
5. What if I made a mistake when I submitted my entry? Do I have to pay again? The answer is NO. Simply submit a support ticket through lindashelpdesk.com or send an email to scriveningspress@gmail.com. We will help you get things sorted out. 🙂
6. If I include the synopsis in the same document as my pages (for GetPubbed) per the instructions, won’t that go over the entry’s page count allowance? The answer is NO. GetPubbed entries will be judged on 10 manuscript pages. The synopsis, while included in the same Word document, does not go toward those pages. That means your actual document could be up to 12 or 13 pages. It’s okay. 🙂
7. What is the difference between the two contests? NovelStarts gives professional feedback on the first five pages of an unpublished manuscript. The manuscript does not have to be finished (but it could be). GetPubbed gives professional feedback on the first 10 pages of a completed manuscript. Do not enter GetPubbed if your novel isn’t finished because finalists will be asked to submit their completed manuscripts to determine the winners.
We hope this helps clear up some misunderstandings and helps you make the decision on whether or not to enter.
