As young adults, my husband and I became local missionaries with Child Evangelism Fellowship. We held teacher training classes for adults, and we taught children in Good News Clubs, Released Time, and Vacation Bible School. Probably the most difficult students we had were the older-than-us teachers who, because of their years of experience, decided we couldn’t teach them much. However, one lady, who had been teaching clubs for fifty years, blessed us by saying, “There’s always something to learn.”
I agree. There’s always something to learn. Taking classes, reading books, talking to experts, and experience (i.e. parenting) are some of the best ways to gain knowledge.
But since my years with CEF, I believe that teaching is one of the best ways to learn.
When I prepared Bible lessons to teach the children, I wanted to make sure that what I taught them was the truth from Scripture. If I added extra-biblical details, I had to study to make sure they were within the historical and cultural settings. I sometimes told the children, “The Bible doesn’t say, but perhaps she thought this.” As I taught, I learned.
I can’t describe to you how much I learned when I homeschooled my children. I felt as though I were in the classroom all over again. And I was, but in the position of teacher. I had to know the facts, or be able to explain something they didn’t understand. I learned that I didn’t always have the answers.
No matter how much I know, there’s always more to learn.
As a writer, I am a teacher. I want my readers to take away a truth, or a life lesson, or a skill.
What do you consider the best way to learn?

I’m a student by nature. I love to learn whether it’s through hands-on activities, sitting in the classroom, teaching others, or reading a book.
Beth Westcott says
I suppose that one reason we are writers is because we want to share what we learn.

I love learning. I usually like learning from an enthusiastic teacher!

An enthusiastic teacher motivates us to learn.
