Every Christian author faith journey looks a little different—but each one bears the unmistakable mark of God’s guiding hand. In today’s guest post, Barbara M. Britton shares how her walk with Christ led her from learning Bible stories as a child to writing biblical fiction that brings the miracles of Jesus vividly to life. Her story is one of obedience, perseverance, and a deep love for the Savior she writes about.

If you had asked me years ago if I dreamed of being a Christian fiction author, I would have responded, “What’s a Christian?”
I had a wonderful family, but we didn’t own a Bible or go to church when I was in elementary school. I sang Christmas carols yet did not understand the lyrics about Jesus. It never crossed my mind that one day I would write a book about Jesus and the miracles He performed around the Sea of Galilee.
After my mom accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior, she took me church. During Sunday school classes I learned about Jesus and placed my faith and trust in Him as a pre-teen.
To add another twist in my Christian journey, I married a seminary student and became a pastor’s wife. The young girl who didn’t know Jesus was teaching the Bible to the youth group.
Becoming an author was not one of my career goals. I’m a terrible typist and my grammar still needs work. God had other plans for me. He gave me a creative brain and a love for teaching Bible stories to children. One day, I was developing curriculum for elementary chapel lessons, and I prayed, “Lord, hit me with some creativity.” He sure did. I drafted chapel lessons, but I also felt compelled to write a story clamoring in my head.
Eventually, after three books gathered dust and rejections, I received a publishing contract. All my books have been fiction, until now.
My recent release combines fictional short stories based on accounts from the Gospel of Mark. I add a reflection from walking around the Sea of Galilee, and I highlight truths about my Savior and His Word.
Loving Jesus and writing about Him are very different. In Across the Lake: Traveling with Jesus Around the Sea of Galilee, Jesus only says what He does in Scripture. What is an author to do with a main character who doesn’t have paragraphs of dialogue and numerous inner thoughts? I had to make the people Jesus healed come to life on the page and imagine the reactions of the disciples.
I’m proud of how my latest project turned out. This book was the most difficult to write, but Philippians 4:13 tells us, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.”
I can’t imagine writing anything else but Christian fiction or nonfiction. I tell people that I have lived a life with Jesus and one without Jesus. Living with Jesus is so much better and the life He offers is eternal.
Discover the life changing power of Jesus in six short stories from the Gospel of Mark. The miracles of Jesus will leap from the page in a Biblical Fiction story, author reflection, and relatable study.
Travel with Jesus as he calms a storm, heals a desperate woman, raises a dead daughter to life, sends His disciples on a minimalist mission, feeds thousands on a hillside, and shows compassion to a persistent mother.
A perfect study for your small group, personal or family devotions, or even a book club.
